Industry leaders came together to address warning signs; responsibilities and the role hospitality professionals can play in combating human trafficking
PHILADELPHIA, PA September 2026: Skål International Philadelphia hosted an important educational program, “Human Trafficking in the Hospitality Industry,” on September 15 at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, bringing together hospitality, tourism, meetings, events and business professionals to raise awareness about human trafficking and the role the travel industry can play in helping combat it.
The panel discussion addressed warning signs of human trafficking, legal and industry responsibilities, appropriate reporting procedures, employee education and ways hospitality organizations can create a stronger culture of awareness and prevention.
“Hospitality is fundamentally an industry centered around welcoming, serving and caring for people,” said Greg DeShields, President of Skål International Philadelphia. “Our goal with this program was to increase awareness and provide hospitality professionals with practical information to help recognize potential warning signs and understand how to respond responsibly.”
Wayne V. Lee Jr., President of Skål International USA, participated as a panelist and emphasized the importance of expanding education throughout the tourism industry.
“Human trafficking is an issue that directly touches the travel and hospitality industry, and education is one of the most important tools we have to help recognize and combat it,” said Lee. “Skål Philadelphia demonstrated tremendous leadership by bringing our industry together for this important conversation. As President of Skål USA, I am committed to expanding education and awareness around human trafficking throughout our organization and encouraging our clubs and members across the country to become more informed, engaged and prepared to help make a difference.”
